Billing Assistant - WATCH US GROW!
Job description
At Houston Hospice, we believe that the heart of our organization are the people who work here. Since 1980, we’ve grown to become the oldest and largest independent nonprofit hospice in the Greater Houston area. What truly defines us is our commitment to walking alongside patients and their families during some of life’s most tender moments.
Our mission is simple: to provide uncompromising, compassionate, end-of-life care to patients of all ages and their families. Serving the 13 counties that surround the Houston area, we are committed to being the highest quality hospice provider wherever we serve. We focus on caring, not curing. Our approach is grounded in teamwork and trust by bringing together skilled healthcare professionals who all share a common purpose: to bring those on our service comfort, dignity, and peace.
Whether care is provided in a family’s home, in a long-term care facility, or in our IPU in the Texas Medical Center, our team is dedicated to meeting patients where they are, both physically and emotionally. Our doctors and nurses are experts in easing pain and managing complex symptoms of life-limiting illnesses. The work we do allows our patients and families to focus on what matters most: being together.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a detail-oriented, organized, and dependable Billing Assistant to join our team! If you enjoy working with numbers, solving problems, and keeping things running smoothly, this could be a great opportunity to put your skills to work for a meaningful mission.
What You'll Do
As our Billing Assistant, you'll play an important role in supporting billing accuracy, reimbursement, and the overall revenue cycle.
Your responsibilities
Insurance Verification: Verify patient insurance eligibility, review coverage and benefits, and help resolve insurance discrepancies. Billing & Claims Support: Generate and review monthly charges, identify billing errors, assist with claim corrections, and support timely reimbursement. Medicare & Medicaid Processing: Review Medicare benefit periods, process required Texas Medicaid documentation, and assist with Medicare and Medicaid billing activities.
Payment & Collections: Assist with payment tracking, cash posting audits, self-pay collections, and outstanding claims follow-up. Data Accuracy: Maintain accurate payer information, reimbursement rates, billing records, and reports within our electronic medical record (EMR) system. Team Collaboration: Work closely with clinical teams, patients, families, and insurance providers to resolve billing concerns and keep processes moving forward.
The Right Fit: We're looking for someone who takes pride in getting the details right, follows through on commitments, and isn't afraid to dig into a discrepancy to find a solution. You'll thrive in this role if you're analytical, resourceful, dependable, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.
Required Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word. Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and handle confidential information with professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree in Accounting, Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field. At least one year of experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, patient accounts, or revenue cycle support. Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance billing processes. Hospice billing experience is a strong plus!
Experience working with electronic medical records, billing software, payer portals, or Texas Medicaid systems. IND123
