SUMMARY The Controls & Automation Engineer collaborates closely with Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, and Sales teams to design, program, and implement electrical controls and automation systems for bulk material handling equipment and integrated systems built by NBE. This role supports projects from initial development through factory runoff, installation, startup, and commissioning at customer facilities.
As the primary traveling engineer on the Controls team, this position plays a key role in ensuring successful equipment integration, resolving field issues, and supporting project execution both onsite and remotely. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, develop, and implement PLC and HMI programs for NBE equipment, including turnkey solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing customer systems. Develop, configure, and troubleshoot automation systems incorporating servo drives and motors, machine vision systems, robotics, and other industrial automation technologies.
Follow assigned projects through all phases of execution, including programming, factory runoff, installation, startup, commissioning, and field troubleshooting. Serve as the primary traveling engineer for the Controls team, providing onsite technical support for assigned projects as well as for projects led by other Controls Engineers following a coordinated project handoff.
EDUCATION
and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field preferred; equivalent relevant education and experience will be considered. 5+ years of industrial controls programming experience required. Experience programming Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens programmable logic controllers (PLCs) required.
Experience with servo systems, machine vision systems, and industrial robotics required. Strong understanding of AC/DC electrical systems required. Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards required. Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30–40% of the time is required.
