PAY SCALE: $23.00 - $28.00 /Hour, based on experience CIVIL SERVICE TITLE(S): Head Custodian (Competitive) JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a supervisory custodial/maintenance position responsible for the efficient and economical cleaning and maintenance of school buildings or other types of facilities.
The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, a higher-level staff member with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in keeping buildings and equipment up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation. General supervision is exercised over lower-level staff such as Cleaners, Laborers, and Custodians.
This position involves supervision of maintenance and cleaning activities for a building or buildings and related systems. Duties include assigning and overseeing the work of maintenance and cleaning staff. Work is performed under general direction of higher-level staff, with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in keeping buildings and equipment up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation.
This class is distinguished from Custodian by the level of responsibility, supervision over subordinate staff, and independent action. Direct supervision is exercised over subordinate employees. Performs related work as required. TYPICAL DUTIES: Schedules and manages events, event space set up, and turnover of event spaces.
Coordinate vendors for event planning, catering, etc. Coordinate with other departments (CIPD, IT, etc.) to ensure event needs are being met. Act as point of contact with outside groups utilizing event space. Pick up catering and other supplies required for events as needed. Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen space.
Assigns and supervises the work of custodians, cleaners and/or custodial workers, including work schedules, vacations, etc. in support of events and event spaces Make periodic inspections of custodial activities to ensure that work is performed according to established standards Oversees all aspects of cleaning and removal of trash Participates in custodial and maintenance work when necessary Makes minor repairs to lockers, window shades, doors, windows and hardware Performs checks on HVAC system and adjusts as needed Receives and handles complaints and a variety of special requests; Assists directors, administrators or other higher level staff in building related duties Requisitions, receives, inventories and distributes building cleaning supplies, cleaning chemicals, paper products, soap, cleaning tools & equipment, etc.
Keeps records and makes reports of supplies used and activities performed Supervises and participates in the removal of snow and ice from roads and sidewalks Overtime work is occasionally required. Other duties as assigned. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet the minimum qualifications for the Civil Service title of Head Custodian ; Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER: Two (2) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in both building cleaning and maintenance activities, one (1) year of which muyst have been in a supervisory capacity; OR, One (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in both building cleaning and maintenance activities, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as a skilled workman in either the carpentry, plumbing, painting or electrical trade.
Special Requirements: If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid Class D driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
