State Park Manager 3
Job description
NOTE: All applicants must apply by 11:59 PM MST on the closing date. Join the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) as the visionary Park Manager 3 for Heyburn, Mc. Croskey and Mowry State Parks in Plummer, Idaho! Based in beautiful Northern Idaho, this is a unique opportunity to lead these three breathtaking state parks as part of one of IDPR’s most diverse and operationally complex park systems.
As Park Manager 3, you will provide leadership and oversight across multiple extraordinary park units, directing staff, visitor services, maintenance, natural and cultural resource stewardship, budgeting, partnerships, infrastructure and day-to-day park operations. Each park brings its own exciting opportunities and operational needs.
Heyburn State Park, the oldest state park in the Pacific Northwest, is a highly developed recreation destination with campgrounds, historic facilities built in the 1930s, two marinas, extensive trails (including the 5 miles of the 72-mile paved Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes running through and managed by the park), and substantial visitor services.
The park’s towering Ponderosa pines and the sparkling waters of Chatcolet, Benewah, and Hidden Lakes offer an incredible backdrop for a career dedicated to protecting natural resources and creating exceptional visitor experiences. Mc. Croskey State Park encompasses approximately 5,000 acres and offers a more remote, backcountry setting with multi-use trails, primitive camping, forest habitat, and remnants of native Palouse Prairie.
Mowry State Park, overlooking Lake Coeur d’Alene, is an emerging park property being developed for group camping, day use and events, providing the Park Manager an opportunity to help shape its future operations and visitor experience. You will lead a dynamic team that includes an Assistant Park Manager, three Park Rangers, maintenance personnel, administrative support staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers.
Success in this position requires a strong, adaptable leader who can establish priorities, develop staff, coordinate resources, and respond effectively to the challenges of managing three geographically dispersed parks with differing facilities, visitation patterns, and operational needs. The position also oversees several complex facilities and business functions beyond traditional park operations.
Due to the large number of recreational residence sites (privately owned cabins and floathomes on park lots) and its marina operations, Heyburn manages a significant portfolio of lease agreements, requiring effective contract administration, coordination with lessees and partners, and careful stewardship of state assets.
The park also oversees a centralized wastewater treatment system and potable water system, adding responsibility for ensuring critical utility infrastructure is properly operated and maintained in accordance with applicable environmental and regulatory requirements. As the face of the parks, you will work closely with local communities, government agencies, concessionaires and lessees, volunteers, recreation organizations, and other partners.
Building productive relationships, navigating competing priorities, and identifying opportunities to improve visitor services and park operations are essential to success. For an experienced park and recreation professional, this position offers the remarkable opportunity to lead a talented team while shaping the future of a broad portfolio of public lands, facilities, infrastructure, agreements and partnerships across three varied state parks that together form one of the crown jewels of Idaho's state park system.
Anyone that is not already certified as an Idaho State Park Compliance Enforcement Officer (CEO) or equivalent will be required to attend and complete the Department’s CEO training. Park housing may be available. If you are a strong leader with a passion for outdoor recreation, natural resource stewardship, historic preservation, and public engagement, we invite you to apply!
