EH&S Coordinator
Job description
General Purpose: The EH&S Coordinator provides field support and coaching to supervisors and crews to ensure consistent implementation of safety programs, regulatory compliance, and a strong, proactive safety culture.
They serve as a key partner to Operations, supporting accountability, consistency, and continuous improvement in safety performance. Through field observation, practical feedback, and follow-through, the coordinator helps project teams apply McCarl's safety expectations in their daily work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Project Safety Support and Planning

Spend time in the field to understand the work, build relationships with crews, and address safety concerns.

Help supervisors and crews apply company safety procedures and project requirements to the work.

Review JHAs with crews to identify specific hazards and verify that the planned controls address them.

Help crews recognize changes in the work, stop when needed, and reassess the plan before continuing.
Safety Inspections and Compliance:

Apply OSHA construction requirements, company procedures, and client safety requirements to assigned work.

Conduct site inspections and field observations, document specific findings, and work with supervisors to address them.

Stop work when an uncontrolled hazard puts people at risk. Notify supervision and verify that the hazard is addressed before work resumes.

Track corrective actions to completion and escalate serious, repeated, or unresolved concerns to project and Safety leadership.
Coaching and Training:

Coach and support foremen in conducting effective JHA discussions with their crews.

Give timely, specific feedback. Recognize and reinforce strong practices, address at-risk practices respectfully, and follow up to see whether the coaching helped.

Deliver safety orientations and training as qualified and assigned. Use field examples and check that employees can apply what they learn.

Support new-hire onboarding
Incident Response and Investigation:
-
Promptly report injuries, incidents, and near misses and support the site's emergency response.

Assist with investigations by gathering facts, preserving evidence, and obtaining employee and witness accounts.

Help Safety leadership identify contributing factors and corrective actions. Escalate serious incidents and high-potential near misses immediately.

Verify that corrective actions are implemented and working, and review relevant lessons with crews.
Documentation, Reporting, and Metrics:

Maintain accurate records of inspections, near misses, observations, coaching, training, incidents, and corrective actions.

Report required safety metrics, field conditions, and unresolved concerns to project and Safety leadership.

Use observations and data to identify recurring issues and focus field support where it is needed.

Complete assigned client and project reports and protect confidential information.
Operational Collaboration:

Work with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to address safety in planning and daily execution.

Participate in project planning, risk assessments, and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reviews.

Help supervisors verify controls for higher-risk work; seek technical support when needed.

Bring field concerns to the Regional Safety Manager and help Operations carry out agreed actions.
Subcontractor and Client Engagement:

Support subcontractor orientations and communicate applicable site safety expectations.

Review assigned subcontractor safety documents and flag gaps for project and Safety leadership.

Coordinate daily requirements with client safety representatives and communicate concerns to project leadership.

Participate in client meetings and safety reviews as assigned; refer broader decisions to Safety leadership.
Continuous Improvement:

Recommend practical improvements to planning and field execution.

Share effective controls and strong practices with Safety leadership for use on other projects.

Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks.

Encourage employees to report hazards and near misses; follow up so they know what was done.
Qualifications
-
Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.

Completion of OSHA 30-hour Construction training preferred.

Two to five years of construction safety experience preferred, ideally in industrial or mechanical contracting.

Working knowledge of construction hazards, safety requirements, and practical controls.
-
Ability to coach employees and field leaders, ask useful questions, and give clear, specific feedback.

Ability to build credibility with crews and supervision and address concerns directly and respectfully.
-
Sound judgment, clear written communication, organized records, and consistent follow-through.
Travel Requirement :
This position may require frequent travel between assigned jobsites and extended overnight stays based on project needs.
Physical
Requirements
Will frequently sit, use hands/fingers, talk/hear. Will frequently stand, walk, grasp, reach with hands/arms, bend/stoop/kneel/squat/crawl. Lift up to 30 lbs. Near vision and ability to adjust focus required.
Work Environment:
Will frequently work in both office and construction site environments. Jobsite conditions include moderate noise levels and exposure to typical construction hazards. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in accordance with company policies and industry standards.
