Asphalt Plant Operator
Job description
Blythe Development is a licensed general contractor specializing in site work, road construction, and golf course construction across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Founded in 1989 by Charlotte natives Jack and Frank Blythe, the company employs more than 900 people and is 100% employee owned. Our experienced workforce self-performs approximately 80% of site groundwork, including clearing, grading, storm drainage, sanitary sewer, waterline, curb and gutter, sidewalks, concrete paving, retaining walls, culverts, bridges, stone base, and asphalt paving.
Position Summary
Join Blythe Brothers Asphalt as an experienced Asphalt Plant Operator supporting safe, efficient hot-mix asphalt production in Charlotte, North Carolina. You will start, operate, and monitor the plant; combine aggregate and liquid asphalt in the mixing drum; manage silo storage; load trucks; coordinate with road crews; and assist with preventive maintenance. This hands-on role is ideal for a safety-focused operator with asphalt plant, loader, and heavy-equipment experience.
Key Responsibilities

Start up, operate, and monitor the hot-mix asphalt plant and related production equipment.

Control the mixing of raw aggregate and liquid asphalt, manage finished material in storage silos, and load trucks for job-site delivery.

Follow and help implement all company safety policies and operating procedures.

Complete and maintain accurate plant operating paperwork and production records.

Communicate with road crews throughout each shift to support production and delivery needs.

Perform basic plant maintenance, troubleshoot routine operating issues, and keep the plant site clean.

Operate a front-end loader when needed.

Read and understand equipment manuals, work directives, and safety instructions.

Perform basic calculations and use basic computer systems.

Work safely at heights and around heavy equipment and moving machinery.

Support other crafts and perform additional duties as needed.

Work nights and weekends as required.
Qualifications
-
Required: Three to five years of relevant industry experience, with emphasis on asphalt plant operations.

Required: Demonstrable experience operating an asphalt plant; this is not typically an entry-level position.

Preferred: High school diploma or GED.

Ability to follow work directions and communicate effectively with job-site supervisors and coworkers.

Positive attitude, strong safety awareness, and willingness to learn new tasks and assist as needed.

Plus: Welding experience.

Plus: Electrical or electronics experience.
Physical Demands
-
Stand for extended periods during shifts of at least eight hours and stoop, bend, and crouch as required.

Frequently lift and carry at least 50 pounds independently and up to 150 pounds with assistance.

Remain alert to concurrent construction-site activities, stationary equipment, contractors, employees, and moving equipment.

Safely climb on and off heavy mobile equipment.
Work Environment

Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Work around the noise, grease, and dust commonly associated with construction projects.

Work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

Encounter substances commonly found on construction sites, including form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready-mixed concrete.
