Crane Operator
Job description
SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Melt Supervisor or leadman, the Crane Operator is responsible for transporting metal from the furnaces to the molds and to operate the crane in such a manner that the iron pourer can pour the metal into the molds in order to make a quality casting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time. Move ladle with the crane to the furnace when the metal is ready Notify the person tapping out when the desired weight is in the ladle Move the ladle and tip it so iron pourer can slag off After the metal is slagged, lock the ladle and move it to the molds.
Maneuver the crane so that the iron pourer can pour (keeping the ladle 6”-8” from pouring dish) After pouring is complete, lock the ladle and return the unused metal to the furnace Communicate with the iron pourer and lead person to find out what metal needs to be poured into which molds. Put the ladle back on torch to keep it hot.
Assist laborers with floor operations including setup of molds clamps, cups, and dishes Notify supervisors of any unsafe conditions Maintain a clean and safe work environment QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Experience working in a foundry environment preferred. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions. Ability to communicate effectively in one-one-one situations to other employees in the company, especially to the leadman and to the iron pourer.
Reasoning Ability Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or touch, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED While performing the job, the crane operator will regularly use a crane, and occasionally use a hammer, wedges and glue. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to handle hot and dirty conditions. The employee regularly is exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee will frequently work near moving mechanical parts and occasionally will be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Hardhat, safety glasses with side shields, gloves, flame-resistant jacket, long sleeves, leggings, face shields, slip-off safety shoes (#646 Kick-Off shoes from Iron Age), and hearing protection. Please note that nylon jogging pants, sweatpants and shorts can not be worn.
