Associate or Full Professor, Empire Innovation Professor (EIP) in Molecules and Materials for Quantum Information Sciences

Department of Chemistry, NYPosted Oct 27, 2026

Job description

Description: The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University seeks to hire a tenure track faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor level to begin in Fall 2027. The ideal candidate will have expertise in molecular or materials systems with applications in quantum information sciences. Preference will be given to candidates focusing on synthesis or characterization, but theorists studying either quantum algorithms with chemical applications or chemical systems with quantum applications will also be considered.

The successful candidate will benefit from interactions with the Stony Brook Quantum Institute, driven by $300M in funding from the State of New York to serve as a hub for collaboration between researchers with interests in Quantum Information Sciences. The position also offers opportunities to engage with quantum materials and characterization capabilities at nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory, as well as theory/algorithm efforts in chemistry, condensed matter, and nuclear physics.

Brookhaven Lab leads C2QA, a DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Center in which Stony Brook University is a partner. Candidate Profile: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field. Candidates are expected to have already established a vibrant, extramurally funded research program that will enhance SBU’s research enterprise.

This includes conducting fundamental research, supporting translational projects that generate intellectual property, and/or contributing to multi-PI grant proposals. The candidate is also expected to have a strong commitment to teaching Chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Excellent candidates at the Assistant Professor level may be considered if they will be qualified for initial appointment at the Associate Professor level, have a significant track record of external funding and publications as an independent investigator, and at least four years of experience in their independent research careers.

Campus Environment: Research in the Department of Chemistry values interdisciplinary science, with faculty participating in research centers across campus, including the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Centers on synthesis science and energy storage, the Center for Advanced Technology in Integrated Electric Energy Systems, the Institute for Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery, the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, and the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action.

The department benefits from close interactions with nearby Brookhaven National Lab (BNL), which provides state-of-the-art facilities for research in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, and energy applications, including the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Stony Brook University has a record of attracting a broad student body and a long standing commitment to improving outcomes for students of all backgrounds, the university has been recognized nationally for a high upward social mobility index, moving students from the lowest quintile of parental income to the top quintile of graduate income.

We seek applicants whose record in research, teaching, and service has prepared them to contribute to our institutional mission to educate and train a broad student population. The Department also has a strong history of excellence in graduate student mentoring, and an NIH-funded Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program and NSF-funded Research Traineeship program in quantitative analysis of materials provide mechanisms for graduate student training and connectivity.

About Stony Brook University: Stony Brook is one of two flagships of the State University of New York and a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). With over 950 research faculty, 26,000 students, and ~$260M in annual research spending, Stony Brook is recognized for its excellence: ● Top 1% of universities worldwide and 39th among U.

S. universities (QS University Rankings). ● 13th among U.S. universities in terms of social mobility (U.S. News & World Report) ● 23rd among public institutions in the US (Forbes) ● #1 Public University in New York (U.S. News & World Report) ● Top 10 most diverse U.S. campuses (24/7 Wall St/USA Today). Stony Brook is also celebrated for its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ranking 7th in Forbes’ Best Employers for Women and 17th in the Best Employers for Diversity (Education category).

Located 60 miles east of New York City on the north shore of Long Island, the Stony Brook area offers a mild climate, excellent public schools, access to world-class transportation and culture, and a growing high-tech industry.
