Role Summary
The Food Service Worker assists in the preparation, set-up, serving, and clean-up of daily school breakfasts and lunches. Additionally, this position operates the cafeteria's computerized point-of-sale system, collects meal payments, and accurately records transactions to ensure compliant government meal reimbursement.
Reporting to the Cafeteria Manager, you work both independently and collaboratively to maintain a safe, spotless, and highly organized kitchen environment. Why You'll Succeed (Qualifications) Educationally Prepared: High school diploma or its equivalent required. Tech & Math Capable: Solid computer skills with the ability to navigate a digital point-of-sale system, collect funds, and balance a cash drawer accurately.
Sanitation Focused: Comprehensive knowledge of food preparation, presentation, and safe food-handling/sanitation rules. (Experience with catering or special events is a plus!) Physically Ready: Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds and stand for long periods in a bustling kitchen environment. Reliable & Self-Directed: A great attendance record, strong organizational skills, and the proven ability to follow complex directions and work effectively without constant supervision.
Your Impact (Key Duties) Point-of-Sale Mastery: Record student meals on the computer system, collect cash/account monies, and balance the register drawer at the end of breakfast and lunch periods. Culinary Assistance: Prepare daily menu items and execute appealing food presentations using established departmental policies and procedures.
Service Coordination: Set up steam tables, serve meals with care, and continuously restock breakfast or lunch components during service windows. Sanitation Excellence: Break down and sanitize steam tables, wash cooking utensils/dishes, assist with total cafeteria clean-up, and maintain an immaculate work environment. Inventory & Stocking: Help receive, organize, and stock the storeroom, commercial warmers, and cooling units to keep optimal inventory levels.
Safety Advocacy: Regularly wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and proactively report any unsanitary or unsafe conditions to the Cafeteria Manager. Work Schedule: Perfect for balancing personal schedules! Daily shifts range from 4 to 6.5 hours (Monday through Friday during regular school hours). Tools of the Trade: Comfort operating commercial kitchen equipment (ovens, stoves, dishwashers, slicers, steam tables) and using standard cleaning chemicals. Required PPE: Hair nets or visors, food-service gloves, hot pads, goggles, and protective gloves are provided and required for safety.
