Apparatus Junior Technician
Job description
Summary The Junior Apparatus Technician is an entry-level technical position responsible for assisting with the inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical power distribution equipment. Working under the direction of experienced Apparatus Technicians, Lead Technicians, and project leadership, this position develops the technical knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to safely perform electrical apparatus testing and maintenance.
The Junior Apparatus Technician supports TIG’s Power & Reliability team by assisting with field testing, equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, documentation, and project activities while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and reliability.. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Technical school, electrical technology coursework, electrical apprenticeship, military electrical training, or related technical education preferred. Previous electrical, industrial maintenance, power distribution, or electrical testing experience preferred but not required. Basic understanding of electrical principles and electrical safety preferred.
Mechanical aptitude and willingness to develop electrical testing and troubleshooting skills. Ability to read and follow written procedures, equipment manuals, drawings, and technical instructions. Basic computer skills and ability to accurately enter and maintain testing and field documentation. Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements when driving is an essential function of the position.
Ability to travel and work overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and scheduled outages as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of electrical principles, terminology, and safe work practices. Basic understanding of electrical power distribution systems and equipment. Ability to identify common electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, motor control centers, switches, and related apparatus.
Ability and willingness to learn electrical testing methods, procedures, and diagnostic equipment. Ability to safely use basic hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment following appropriate training. Ability to read and develop an understanding of electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
Ability to follow established testing procedures and technical instructions. Basic understanding of lockout/tagout and electrical hazard awareness. Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and immediately communicate concerns to supervision. Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to follow direction and work effectively under the supervision of experienced technicians. Ability to accurately document work performed and test results. Willingness and ability to participate in ongoing technical and safety training. Commitment to developing the technical competencies necessary for progression within the Power & Reliability team.
Essential Functions
Assist experienced technicians with inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical power distribution apparatus. Assist with testing and maintenance of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, motor control centers, switches, and related equipment.
Perform visual and mechanical inspections under the direction of qualified personnel. Assist with electrical testing, including insulation resistance, contact resistance, transformer turns ratio, and other applicable testing procedures. Set up, connect, operate, and properly store electrical testing equipment under appropriate supervision and after required training.
Assist with cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, exercising, and maintaining electrical apparatus as required. Learn to identify equipment damage, deterioration, abnormal conditions, and potential deficiencies. Assist experienced technicians with troubleshooting electrical and mechanical equipment problems. Read and follow electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, testing procedures, and manufacturer instructions.
Accurately record test readings, equipment information, inspection findings, and work performed. Assist with preparation of field test sheets, service reports, and other required project documentation. Verify tools and test equipment are maintained, properly stored, and ready for field use. Participate in pre-job planning, job safety analyses, toolbox meetings, and other required safety activities.
Follow TIG safety policies, customer requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safe work practices, and applicable NFPA 70E requirements. Maintain work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Assist with equipment startup, commissioning, outage, and return-to-service activities within the employee's level of training and qualification.
Participate in technical training and demonstrate progressive development of electrical testing, equipment, and troubleshooting competencies. Support scheduled outages, shutdowns, emergency assignments, and other field activities as required. Physical Demands Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and move throughout active industrial facilities.
Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain, gravel, concrete, elevated platforms, and other industrial surfaces. Ability to climb stairs and ladders as required to access electrical equipment and work areas. Ability to work at various elevations and in confined or restricted areas when properly trained and authorized.
Ability to wear required PPE, including electrical and arc-rated protective equipment, for extended periods. Ability to visually inspect electrical equipment, wiring, test instruments, drawings, and test results. Ability to safely handle and operate electrical testing equipment, hand tools, and related equipment following appropriate training.
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively and safely perform assigned work in environments with moderate to elevated noise levels. Work Environment This position primarily works in industrial facilities, power generation facilities, substations, manufacturing plants, petrochemical facilities, and other customer locations.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to electrical hazards, energized equipment, elevated noise levels, moving equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, heat, cold, and varying weather conditions. The position requires strict adherence to TIG and customer safety requirements and the use of appropriate PPE.
Work involving electrical hazards or energized equipment may only be performed within the employee's demonstrated training, qualification, and authorization. Frequent travel and work outside normal business hours may be required, including nights, weekends, holidays, outages, shutdowns, and emergency assignments based on customer and project requirements.
