Problem Solving Complexity: This role is regularly non-routine and complex, requiring significant analysis, judgement, experience and knowledge. Typical challenges include investigating data discrepancies, responding to high-priority information requests, identifying performance trends, compliance risks or governance concerns, and ensuring accurate reporting where information may be incomplete or inconsistent. The role holder is expected to independently analyse and interrogate data, resolve reporting issues and provide reliable business intelligence to support operational and strategic decision-making.
More complex issues, such as emerging governance concerns, significant performance variances or potential compliance risks, may require advice from clinical or operational leads. Risks with wider organisational, regulatory or reputational implications, including significant non-compliance, data governance concerns or systemic reporting failures, would require escalation to senior management.
The most challenging aspect of the role is balancing the need for rapid delivery with the need for robust analysis, accuracy and governance assurance. This position requires both strategic and tactical thinking, enabling the postholder to identify long-term trends, risks and improvement opportunities while also responding effectively to urgent operational demands and changing business priorities.
Impact of the role: This role provides critical performance, governance and risk information to senior leaders, Executive teams and Board stakeholders, enabling informed operational and strategic decision-making. Accurate reporting provides assurance that appropriate controls are in place, compliance requirements are being met, and risks are being effectively managed.
Conversely, inaccurate or delayed information could lead to poor decision-making, missed risks, compliance failures and reputational impact. The role directly supports departmental and organisational objectives by providing performance insight, identifying emerging risks and issues, and enabling leaders to take timely action.
It operates across both day-to-day operational demands and longer-term planning cycles, including annual performance and governance activities. The most impactful decisions involve interpreting and validating management information, identifying and escalating risks, highlighting performance trends, and determining when issues require senior leadership intervention.
While the role does not have direct accountability for the performance of multiple business units, it has significant influence on organisational outcomes through the quality and reliability of the information it provides. Influence/ Working relationships: This role works regularly with colleagues across the organisation, including operational teams, subject matter experts, managers and senior leaders, to gather information, agree priorities, monitor progress and ensure reporting deadlines are achieved.
The postholder must build effective working relationships, ask probing questions, challenge information constructively and secure cooperation from stakeholders at all levels. External interaction is typically with Occupational Health service providers and suppliers, supporting the collection, validation and improvement of management information relating to services such as physiotherapy, DSE and Drug Alcohol programmes.
Interactions are primarily focused on exchanging information, coordinating actions, agreeing deadlines, providing performance and governance insights, and constructively challenging information where clarification or further investigation is required. The role relies on strong communication and influencing skills to ensure accurate, timely and reliable information is available to support decision-making.
Resource: The role has no direct reports and is not responsible for formal people management activities such as recruitment, performance management, conduct, capability or absence management. However, the postholder works closely with service leads to monitor workforce pressures, health trends, service risks, expenditure and supplier commitments, highlighting concerns and supporting informed decision-making.
The role has no budgetary responsibility (£0) and does not manage or control any physical assets or equipment. The postholder provides oversight of Occupational Health and Wellbeing projects, maintaining visibility of progress, risks, dependencies and key milestones to help ensure deadlines are achieved.
