Job description

Build something that matters. At Delta Star the work we do has a real impact. Every transformer we build helps deliver reliable electricity to homes, businesses, and communities across North America. As we continue to grow, we are looking for people who want more than just a job. We are looking for individuals who want to learn, contribute, solve challenges, and build a meaningful career alongside a team that is committed to delivering power at all times.

Summary Delta Star Inc. is seeking a skilled and safety‑driven Field Service Technician to support the assembly, oil processing, testing, maintenance, and repair of power transformers across a wide range of voltage classes. If you enjoy hands‑on technical work, thrive in outdoor environments, and are motivated by solving complex challenges in the field—we want to hear from you!

What You’ll Do As a Field Service Technician, you’ll work as part of a field crew supporting moderate to complex transformer service projects under the direction of Lead or Senior Field Service Technicians. You’ll perform mechanical and electrical assembly, oil processing, testing, and repair activities while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and professionalism.

A Day in the Life

Your day may begin with reviewing project scope, drawings, and site requirements before heading to a customer location—often a live substation. You’ll assist with transformer assembly, gasket replacements, oil processing, and testing activities. You may operate vacuum oil processors, troubleshoot warranty issues, support customer installations, or conduct field testing.

Work is largely outdoors, across all weather conditions, and often involves significant physical activity. Safety awareness and teamwork are essential every day. Specific Duties Perform hands‑on assembly, maintenance, and repair of power transformers under guidance of Lead or Senior Technicians. Support mechanical and electrical connections on or inside transformers.

Operate oil processing equipment and assist with vacuum oil fills and circulation. Complete vacuum logs, oil processing documentation, and testing connections. Perform common transformer services, including gasket replacement, oil drains/fills, relocations, retrogen fills, and internal inspections. Conduct warranty work and troubleshoot issues such as leaks, gauge replacements, radiator issues, and CT replacements.

Support and supervise customer installations, answering technical questions professionally. Perform DSFS field testing, including insulation resistance, power factor (overall and bushing), hot collar, excitation, surge arrester, oil testing, and basic control verification (fans, LTCs, nitrogen systems). Identify transformer components, verify shipping manifests, and assess missing or loose parts.

Demonstrate working knowledge of LTC components, controls, oil handling, leak remediation, and operational checks. Assist with general equipment maintenance and restocking supplies. Maintain accurate bi‑monthly timesheets and weekly expense reports. Work safely in outdoor environments and less‑than‑ideal jobsite conditions.

What We’re Looking For A technically capable and professional field service technician with hands‑on transformer experience, strong safety discipline, and the flexibility to support demanding field schedules. Position Requirements Minimum 3 years of transformer field service experience. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field preferred (may substitute for experience).

Valid driver’s license and DOT medical card required; Class A CDL with air brake endorsement preferred. Must complete OSHA 30, OSHA 1910.269, and First Aid/CPR/AED within the first 3 months of hire. Skills & Competencies Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude in transformer service applications. Knowledge of oil processing systems, field testing procedures, and assembly practices.

Understanding of transformer components, LTCs, and common failure modes. Strong safety awareness and ability to work in live substations. Professional communication skills when working with customers and third‑party contractors. Computer literacy and ability to complete field documentation accurately. Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to continuously learn and grow.

Travel Requirements Approximately 80% travel, based on customer and market demand. Willingness to drive or fly as required to job sites. Ability to work extended hours and adapt to variable schedules and conditions (weather, live substations, remote locations).
