Job description
Position Summary
The Peer Recovery Coach uses lived experience, compassion, and a commitment to recovery to help individuals navigate their own path toward wellness and stability. This position provides encouragement, mentorship, and practical support to individuals recovering from substance use disorders, helping them identify personal goals, build confidence, access resources, and strengthen connections within their communities.
The Peer Recovery Coach builds trusting relationships with clients, supports them in developing individualized recovery goals and coping strategies, and helps connect them with healthcare, housing, employment, and other community resources. The role also partners with families, providers, and community organizations to create a strong network of support that promotes long-term recovery and well-being.
Position Responsibilities Build Meaningful Connections: Develop supportive, trusting relationships with individuals in recovery and provide encouragement, mentorship, and guidance throughout their recovery journey. Support Individual Recovery Goals: Manage an assigned caseload and work with peers to identify strengths, establish personalized recovery goals, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress.
Connect Clients to Resources: Help clients access essential community resources, including food, clothing, supportive housing, Medicaid, employment and job-readiness services, public assistance, and other available supports. Provide Peer Support: Facilitate site-based daily support and peer groups that encourage connection, shared experiences, skill-building, and recovery.
Provide Community-Based Support: Visit, support, and transport clients as appropriate and in accordance with program needs and established guidelines. Strengthen Support Networks: Collaborate with family members, internal and external case managers, healthcare providers, and community partners to coordinate services and promote continuity of care.
Promote Recovery & Stability: Participate in outreach with community partners to help coordinate services and strengthen the resources available to clients working toward sustained recovery. Maintain Consistent Contact: Maintain regular communication with clients to understand their needs, encourage progress, identify barriers, and connect them with appropriate support.
Maintain Accurate Documentation: Complete timely and accurate documentation in accordance with agency, contractual, and regulatory requirements. Use Technology Effectively: Utilize the agency's electronic health record (EHR) and other computer systems to enter, update, and retrieve client information and complete required documentation.
Contribute to Team Success: Perform other duties as assigned to support clients, the program, and the organization's mission. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, and community resources that support long-term recovery and stability. Strong verbal, interpersonal, active listening, and relationship-building skills.
Ability to establish professional, respectful, and supportive relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to use a personal computer to enter, edit, and retrieve information and prepare reports and correspondence. Basic problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize challenges, identify resources, and seek appropriate solutions.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and remain organized in a community-based environment. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect client confidentiality. Job Requirements High school diploma or high school equivalency required. Must have a minimum of 12 months in recovery; two years is preferred.
Peer Support Specialist certification required or the ability to obtain certification within the first three months of employment. A valid driver's license and current automobile insurance may be required based on assigned job duties.
Essential Functions
& Physical Demands This position may involve community-based work and requires the ability to perform the following physical and sensory activities: Positioning: Driving as required by assigned job duties; infrequent standing and walking; constant sitting. Gross Mobility: Rare climbing and crawling; infrequent balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching; frequent to constant reaching, handling, and fingering.
Sensory: Rare tasting/smelling; infrequent color vision; occasional far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision; frequent near- and mid-range visual acuity and visual accommodation. Communication: Frequent to constant talking and listening.
