About the Role
The Estimator plays a critical role in the financial planning and project management process by accurately assessing the costs associated with heavy civil construction projects. This position requires a thorough analysis of project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates that guide budgeting and bidding decisions.
The Estimator collaborates closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure estimates are realistic, competitive, and aligned with project goals. By providing precise and timely cost projections, the Estimator helps the organization minimize financial risks and maximize profitability. Ultimately, this role supports strategic decision-making and contributes to the successful delivery of projects within budget and on schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field or equivalent experience. Proven experience as an Estimator or in a similar role within the construction industry. Strong understanding of cost estimation techniques, construction methods, and materials. Proficiency in estimation software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or equivalent. Experience with project management software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. Knowledge of local building codes, regulations, and industry standards. Strong negotiation and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Review and analyze project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand project scope and requirements. Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and suppliers to gather necessary information and validate assumptions.
Develop and maintain databases of historical costs and pricing information to improve estimate accuracy. Present and explain estimates to internal teams and clients, addressing any questions or concerns. Monitor project progress and update estimates as necessary to reflect changes in scope or market conditions. Assist in bid preparation and submission, ensuring compliance with client requirements and deadlines.
Skills: The Estimator utilizes analytical skills daily to interpret complex project documents and translate them into accurate cost projections. Proficiency with estimation and project management software enables efficient data analysis and report generation, ensuring estimates are both detailed and timely. Strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting findings clearly to stakeholders.
Organizational skills help manage multiple projects and maintain comprehensive cost databases, which improve future estimate accuracy. Additionally, negotiation and problem-solving abilities support effective supplier interactions and adjustments to estimates as project conditions evolve.
