Elementary Deaf Education Teacher
Job description
Is Deaf education your passion? Kenya is looking for driven individuals to support literacy among learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. Early literacy for children in Kenya who are deaf is significantly constrained by systemic barriers that begin with late identification and limited access to language during foundational years.
With only 73 assessment centers serving more than 20 million children, most learners who are deaf enter school without a proper screening and diagnosis, resulting in late Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) acquisition and weakened cognitive and linguistic development. Parents delay sending children who are deaf to school. Teachers often lack KSL proficiency, interpreters are scarce, and instructional materials are designed for learners who can hear, leading to delayed early language acquisition and limiting the development of basic reading, writing, and expressive language skills among children who are deaf.
As a result, children who are deaf fail to acquire foundational literacy skills in their early years, which can cause persistent underachievement in the future. As an Elementary Deaf Education Teacher, you will help address these gaps by strengthening teachers’ KSL knowledge, supporting effective early literacy instruction methods, developing adapted teaching and learning materials, and working directly with students to build reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
Volunteers will engage parents and community members to promote KSL, encourage early literacy at home, and foster a stronger reading culture by helping learners who are deaf achieve future academic success.
